  1. Despite the fact that Systema guy has all the punching power of Bart Simpson swinging his arms at Lisa, I like that for once a traditional martial arts fighter actually uses the style he has learnt, rather than descending into throwing desperate haymakers like you see in most other match ups.

  2. Despite eating a fair number of strikes, Systema guy was smiling all the way through. I think this clearly shows he had an attitude of "How about I test my art out and see how far I can it it!?" rather than "I'm a cocky S.O.B. who thinks my art is better than yours!". It also shows he has taken some hits before and has some level of toughness.

  3. I guess we're just not looking at things the same way. MMA guy already seems 30% aggressive (compared to a real fight) and 50% on the offensive. Systema guy doesn't even seem close, and to be there instead mainly for fun. Something tells me that if he finally decided to equally go on the offensive with the same ease and efficiency as he parries on the defensive, we would be watching a very different exchange. And I've seen Systema guys demonstrate even way more efficiency than that, and being much less playful ; which I admit is perhaps what this Systema guy should probably be doing instead of just messing around.

  4. The systema fighter looked like he was doing a parody… that is truly embarassing to watch. How can grown men do this and think they are learning to fight? Pure Bullshido.

  5. For once, a guy that actually applied his style and it looks like what is advertised. And he did okay, I think. Most of the styles, when put under pressure, boil down to regular kickboxing, in a way.

  6. As goofy as it looks there's definitely something to learn here, especially in the kicking department. I like the effortless little leg kicks at unorthodox targets. In most martial arts we learn cool kicks, that we will most likely not use in a self-defence situation. Why risk stability in the mud or wet pavement when you can just punch? But these require little effort, are super fast and you stay stable. And I bet it really sucks to get hit with one of those in a combat boot.

  7. Hi Jerry! The story of is sparring is quite interesting: The Systema instructor posted an advertisment for his gym on a romanian fight forum back in 2010. He also stated that ,, if any other martial arts practitioner wants to find out how systema works real time to come for a sparring''. This sounded a little bit as a challenge for other martial arts, that other forum members took it personal and trash talked him that that systema is no good, they will come to his gym and kick is ass, knock him out, stuff like that, but eventually none of them showed up :)) I was the only one that noticed him and come to a sparring, but did not trash talk the Systema instructor because I respected the guy that wanted to test his systema knowledge another martial arts. So I showed up at his gym, with my boxing gloves and I admit that the best way was for both of us to spar with mma gloves, unfortunately i had no extra mma gloves to lend him, so we agreed for a tehnical sparring for me to strike with boxing gloves and him to strike open hand. Before the sparring started I tought that if we will try to hit me full force, I will take my gloves off and go full force also bare knuckle but fortunately it was no need for that, the systema instructor was a honorable person and remained friends afterwards, even went to drink a beer after the sparring. The systema instructor told me that he had a taekwondo background that helped him wih his kicking. I admit that back in 2010 I had pretty limited ground game with only some sanda training, but you saw that even with this I could take him down very easy as you said also and he had no takedown defense or grappling response, so this could be the biggest flaw in systema. For all of your Jerry's subscribers stay tuned! I gave him some hardcore real fights against a romanian famous tv showman that was bashing Muay Thai, MMA, Kickboxing practitioners, the second time we fought i knocked him really hard that he almost died, it is no joke, good thing that he is fine now, wait for Jerry's new breakdown for the fights I gave him 🙂

  8. If a system cannot throw a straight punch or jab, which is the simplest form of attack, then they are just wasting time and power inefficient.

  9. I'm convinced that Systema was invented by Russian oligarchs to intentionally try and guarantee that Russians and Chinese are incapable would overthrowing them or defending themselves.

  10. MMA guy figured out the long extended lead hand gave the systema problems being out of range and trying to close the distance. But let's credit systema guy! I like his little 360° turn around attacking and deflecting counters attacks

  11. systema might be the next evolution of fighting. Like that actually works. a bit like aikido flow , "aiki" . It's about controlling the energy thrown at you and rolling with it. Being as relaxed as possible.

  12. It's interesting and pretty impressive how he's doing all the slow, fluid stuff with legit opposition and not getting his arse handed to him. I thought they just did that stuff mostly in training to build muscle memory and reflexes and whatnot. It's kind of a shame how so few martial artists seem to take systema seriously enough to challenge it for real, if nothing else, it's fascinating in concept and needs more documentation. From my understanding of it, systema done "properly" is like "grandad brawling" (if you've ever seen a 75 year old dude fkn wreck someone you'll know exactly what I mean), with a weirdly psychological, almost "sleight of hand" element to it (that'd be the bullshido, but I like to imagine it's the product of weird research they did in the 60s 😆)

  13. you really didn't need to tell us the systema guy was in camo. Full intensity, Systema guy was getting KOd

  14. Whoa!! The systema guy looks almost like the Russian drunk-fu silly claw dance guy….. You know the meth-head looking guy who does the flailing arm elbow claws with backward stomp kicks…

    That guy.

  15. My usual highly critical and doubtful side doesn't know what to say?! Even though this is a controlled spar, and not a brawl, that guy's systema is actually working. Lol!

What is very impressive are the times that the systema proponent spins out of a direct line of attack like aikido. I know that there is a mutual respect between the aikido community and systema as they both share underlying principles of flowing with the opponent's moves and "invisible force" and there is footage of systema master Vladimir Vasiliev doing demos and workshops for the aikido community.

Can this guy beat Jon Jones? Probably not. But could he beat an unskilled opponent in a road rage incident? Maybe…

But I agree. At least he is using the style he is representing rather than just falling back on kickboxing and brawling like we see a lot of kung fu fighters do who fight like nothing style wise that they claim to represent. Very entertaining and compelling.

BTW, the footage look like it was shot on VHS or they smeared Vaseline on the lens to make it look romantic.

  16. Systema shows some similarities to some drunken style kung fu (kick at 0:50 and the fluidity in general) , I wonder whether there was a connection back in history.
I mean China has a Russian border, it may have been that some drunken style techniques were brought there then it became an own style.
